Howard M. Hawkins, 56, passed away on Monday, June 17, 2013, in Roanoke, Virginia. He was born on August 4, 1956, in Bedford, Virginia, a son of the late Clarence M. and Helen Roberts Hawkins, who lived in Bedford. Howard is survived by an uncle, Hubert A. Roberts and his wife, Elizabeth W. Roberts; an aunt, Nancy Roberts Compton; and numerous cousins and loved ones. The family is especially grateful for the friendship of Tom and Tina Sullivan, who were so helpful to Howard. The family also wishes to thank the members of the Evangelistic House of Prayer in Ferrum, Virginia, for their loving ministry and thoughtful care of Howard during recent years and throughout his illness. Howard was a dedicated church member where he sang in the choir, operated the church projection system, assisted with Vacation Bible School and was a full participant in worship services. Donna Susan Burnette van Wijk, 56 of Fredericksburg, and formerly of Bedford County passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013 in Lynchburg. She was born on Saturday, February 2, 1957 in Bedford County, VA, a daughter of Sammy Adams Burnette of Bedford who survives and the late Monsey Lewis Burnette. After graduation, she attended Virginia Tech, then enlisted in the U. S. Navy serving five years on the USS Emory S. Land. Her career as a Systems Analyst included work at WR Systems, British Aerospace Electronics and DCS. She enjoyed skiing, white water rafting, antiques, sewing and growing flowers. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her brothers, Mack Burnette & wife, Tammy, Monty Burnette & wife, Jo Ellen; a niece, Devon, and a nephew, Matthew. Mary Evelyn Hudson Thaxton, 95 of Moneta, VA went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 9, 2013. She was born on Sunday, December 16, 1917 in Roanoke, a daughter of the late William Thomas Hudson and Lillie Perdue Hudson. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Will “Jack” Thaxton, a brother, Oren E. Hudson and a sister, Mildred H. Smith. Roy Robert Rardin, 88 of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at the Salem Veterans Administration Hospital after a long illness. He was born on Friday, October 24, 1924 in Kenosha, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Don Rardin He possessed a great love for music, was a lifelong barbershopper and a member of the Smith Mountain Lake Harmoneers. Roy was a World War II Veteran having been awarded the purple heart. Roy would probably tell you that his greatest love was the Lord. He faithfully attended Calvary Baptist Church in Bedford until his decline. In later years, he looked forward to home visits from Pastor Ray. Surviving is his wife, Frances Rucker Lacy Rardin; step-daughters, Joan L. Carey & husband Jeff H. of Cocoa, FL, Anne L. White of Richmond, and Cathy L. Viar & husband John of Evington; 2 sisters, Joyce R. Patton and Florence R. Martinson; sister-in-law, Jo Ann Rardin all of WI; 9 step grandchild, Sylvia K. Luman, James G. Kimery, Michael R. Pearl Virginia Fielder Kendrick, 86 of Bedford, VA passed away Monday, June 3, 2013 at Campbell Rest Home. She was born on Wednesday, March 16, 1927 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Oscar Philmore Fielder and Elsie Vennie Aliff Fielder. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leo Daniel Kendrick. She was a retired employee of Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Surviving are her sister, Linda F. John Massie Turner, 90, a life-long resident of Bedford went to be with the Lord on June 1, 2013 after a short illness. He was born September 30, 1922 to Henry F. and Vernie Massie Turner. He was a long-term employee of Piedmont Label retiring in 1984 after a 42 year career and was a member of the Bedford Fire Department for 24 years serving as Chief from 1962 to 1968 and remains close to his fire compatriots past and present. He was an active member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church. John enjoyed hunting and fishing and raising beagles. In his later years he enjoyed yard work and visits with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters, Nancy Reid and Ann Grey of Bedford, and Frances Martin of Bonifay, Florida. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lillian L. “Polly” Turner; a sister, Margaret Key of Bedford; two sons, John F. Turner of Pueblo, Colorado and Stephen L Turner and his wife Charlotte of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; three daughters at heart, Joan Turner of Roanoke, Rebecca Meadema and husband Sam of Danville, Beth Dooley and husband Eric of Bedford; four grandchildren, Joel Turner of Roanoke, Jo Beth Jones and husband Brian of Roanoke, Brad Turner of New York, New York, and Abby Steketee and husband Steve of Reno, Nevada;and 3 great grandchildren. Gilbert Lloyd Wilson, Jr., 53 of Bedford, passed away Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born on Monday, August 24, 1959 in Bedford, a son of Yvonne Witt Wilson of Bedford and the late Gilbert Lloyd Wilson, Sr. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Janet Wilson Lodge. He was a Security Guard at Georgia Pacific. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his daughters, Jamie Wilson Browley, Jennifer Wilson both of Bedford; a sister, Teresa Wilson Overstreet of Bedford and a grandson, Nathan Browley of Bedford. Lawrence Charles Selfridge, 59, of Huddleston, VA., and formerly of Montgomery, NY, died at his home in Huddleston after an eight month struggle with cancer. The son of the late Frederick F. Selfridge, Sr. and Alice Conner Selfridge, he was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on October 10, 1953. He was predeceased by his wife Laurie Rae Selfridge. Larry was a graduate of Valley Central Schools in Montgomery, NY, class of 1971, and attended University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA where he earned his lumber Inspection certification. His is survived, and will be greatly missed, by his mother, Alice Conner Selfridge of Montgomery; brothers Fred F. Selfridge, Jr., and his wife Gail of Walden, NY; Eric W. Selfridge and his wife, Suzanne of Huddleston, VA; Andrew B. Selfridge of Montgomery, NY; nephews Eric of Fort Myers, FL., Christopher of Walden, NY, and Lowell of Montgomery, NY, and nieces Allison Handy of Milford, PA., Sadie Klein of Raleigh, NC., Kasey Selfridge of Florida, NY., LeeAnneFeagan of Orlando, FL., and Angie Selfridge of Gardiner, NY. He was also the great uncle of six nieces and nephews. Larry was a lumber inspector and carpenter by trade. He possessed a true love for hiking and loved every aspect of the forest and animals both wild and domesticated. He was seldom seen driving without a faithful dog perched in the passenger’s seat. He showed his love for wood by making furniture as well as creating intricate carvings of canes, wall hangings, hand mirrors and cutting boards as well as many other items. He was also a master of scrimshaw. He was a self-taught musician who mastered both the harmonica and keyboard and entertained many by playing solo or with bands in Orange County, NY., and in Bedford and Roanoke Counties in VA. Before he moved from Montgomery, Larry was instrumental, along with his brothers and two friends, Randy Sutter and the late Larry Sutter, in forming and playing in the original Sailcat band. That band is still active and popular in Orange County, NY. Whenever Larry appeared as a spectator he would, more often that not, be spotted by someone who had previously heard him play and he would be asked to “sit in for a set.” He never left home without his hand carved box filled with his beloved harmonicas. Larry’s family expressed “This oldest brother had a love for not only the playing and listening of music but also possessed an extensive knowledge and appreciate of the history of music; especially the blues era, and enjoyed sharing and discussing blues history with all that were interested. ‘A brother and best friend.’ “ Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Overhiser Funeral Home, 76 Union Street, Montgomery, NY., and at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2013, SML Gallery, 13366 Booker T. Geraldine (Gerry) Mitchell Cassidy, 78 of Moneta, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Bedford Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She was born on Sunday, June 17, 1934 in Caribou, Maine and moved to Virginia in 1956. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leonard W. Mitchell. She was a retiree of Rubatex Corporation and was a member of Radford Baptist Church. Selma Scott Cousart, 88 of Bedford, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Oakwood Manor Nursing Home. She was born June 30, 1924 in Bedford, a daughter of the late John W. Scott and Eunice Martin Scott. She was a longtime employee of the Woolen Mill and a retiree of Rubatex. She was a member of Bedford Presbyterian Church and on occasions would attend Otterville United Methodist Church with her family. Surviving is her son, J.C. Cousart & wife, Mary Lou of Bedford; two granddaughters, Stacie Cousart of Bambury, England, Cristi Cousart and a great grandson, Lucian of Bedford; a faithful cousin, Jan Watson and two special friends, Christine Eubank of Bedford and Sue Smith of England. She had a great love for her cats and it was often said that her smile could light up a room. Selma had a talent for making people around her feel better. She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed being around her family and friends, especially her granddaughters and great grandson. Margaret Leebrick McKinney, 84 of Bedford, passed on to her heavenly home Sunday, May 19, 2013. She was born on Friday, November 2, 1928 in Lynchburg, VA. Margaret was a devoted and loving wife to the late James “Sonny” McKinney for 34 years. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Doris Buffano, a son, Ray Tyree and a daughter, Peggy Croft. Margaret was a Christian and held her membership with Suck Spring Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and retired from Sam Moore Furniture in Bedford, VA. She enjoyed spending time with her family and cooking & especially enjoyed a good game of bingo. Surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Ron Tyree & wife, Debbie of Moneta, Tony McKinney & wife, Sharon of Bedford, Jeff McKinney & wife, Stephanie of Roanoke; She adored her grandchildren, Patricia, Barbara Jean, Ray Jr., Vickie, Jeremy, Chris, Corbett, Kirsten & Jake..her last spoken words were about them. Cova Iris Dooley Gray passed away peacefully on Friday, May 17, 2013 at her home in Blue Ridge. She was born on Wednesday, April 1, 1925 and was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Gray, Sr. Immediate survivors include her son, James Gray, Jr. of Bethesda, MD & Blue Ridge; daughter Barbara Byrd & husband, Gary of Richmond; daughter, Shirley Gray of Blue Ridge; son, Robert Gray of Blue Ridge. She always expressed great pride in her children and leaves behind a memorial of beautiful gardens she created for them. She was born on Thursday, January 5, 1922 in Miltonville, KS, a daughter of the late Arthur Carl Czapanskiy and Lula Gertrude Hunt Czapanskiy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Manning Brewer. She was a retired civil servant from the Federal Aviation Agency and was a member of Patmos United Methodist Church. Claude Wayne “Smokey” Handy, 70 of Bedford, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born on Tuesday, February 16, 1943 in Roanoke, a son of the late Frank C. Handy and Avis Louise Secrest Handy. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Biggs Handy. He was a retired employee of Sam Moore Furniture and a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of the U. S. Army. Surviving are his daughters, Cheryl Harris & husband, Mike of Bedford, Janet Overstreet & friend, Craig Hannah of Craig Co.; a brother, Ray S. Fariss and Maggie McGhee Fariss. She was also preceded in death by her first husband & the father of her children, LeRoy Warren “Jack” Dickson and her second husband, W. Edward Dickson. She was a lifelong member of Ephesus United Methodist Church. She was born on Monday, September 7, 1931 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Willie Isaac Owen and Valle Elizabeth Cobb Owen. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Lindbergh Kirby, Sr., as well as four sisters & three brothers. She was a Antique Dealer, a lover of local history and genealogy, and a member of the Friends of New London, VA Historical Museum, the Bedford Gen. William R. Terry Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Bedford City/County Museum and Mentow Baptist Church and attended Huddleston Community Church. Surviving is her Sandra K. Robert James “Old Dude” Dinwiddie, Sr., 81 of Bedford, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013 at his residence. He was born on Tuesday, November 24, 1931 in Bedford County, a son of the late Thomas Dinwiddie and Evelyn Roberts Dinwiddie . He was a retired employee of Rubatex, a member of Bedford Christian Church, the VFW, Bedford Moose Lodge # 1897 and the American Legion. He was also a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during the Korean Conflict. Principia Nass, better known as “Dolly”, 91, left this earth on May 2, 2013. She is survived by her devoted daughters Elyse & Leslie; granddaughters Jennifer, Lisa-Marie, & Kristin; great granddaughter, Dakota, & son-in-laws, Kurt & David. She was born on September 11, 1921 in Jersey City N.J. Dolly served her country during WWII, met the love of her life, Richard, married and celebrated 56 years together. She was a working woman ahead of her time, whether balancing family, leading a Girl Scout meeting or running the PTA. Dolly was always full of unconditional love, providing an open heart & shoulder to cry on. Her flair for fashion and artistic ability were evident in her home and wardrobe closet. Residing in many areas of N.J. most of her life, Dolly was an avid reader until the effects of macular degeneration took her sight, and she became an active advocate for the visually impaired. Dolly can no longer dry our tears or help mend our broken hearts but she has shown us how. Christopher Wayne Keen (9/3/56 to 5/2/13), has passed on from this life. Chris was the youngest son of the late Frances Anne and Christopher Silas Keen of Huddleston, Virginia. He was the devoted husband of thirty-six years to Jacquelyn Husted Keen of Strongsville, Ohio, and the little brother of John Keen, Ruth Keen, and Jack Lacy. He was
the dedicated father to Nathan (Spud) Keen of Lynchburg, Heather (Geg) Keen of Huddleston, and Traci (Goober) Keen of Los Angeles. He is also survived by six grandchildren, nephews and nieces: Karma, Sadella, Freeland, Riley, Raheem, Rashaad. Michael, Sarah, Ian, Clinton, Cyle, Josh, and Samantha who loved him dearly. He was an athlete, sports fan, history buff, rock enthusiast, and an amazing and dedicated family man who spent his life providing the best for his wife and children. He supported them in their individual pursuits of happiness and allowed them each to be who they were as children and adults. He loved and supported each of them in a very special way. He will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved him. Lea Palmer Keister, 87 of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at her home following complications with Kidney Cancer. She was born on Thursday, September 17, 1925 in Dublin, VA, a daughter of the late Guthrie Johnson Palmer, Sr. and Sarah McDonald Palmer. She was also preceded in death by husbands, Atlas Joseph Perry, Sr. and Donald Stinson Keister; a brother, Guthrie Johnson Palmer, Jr. and two sisters, Lula Palmer Williams and Sarah Palmer Robertson. Upon marrying her first husband, Joseph Perry in 1950, the couple moved to Altavista, Virginia where he was employed as an engineer at Burlington Mills. It was there that she had her two sons, Joe and John. After the death of her husband, she remarried Donald Keister in 1973 and they relocated to Dublin, Virginia. She made her final move in 1980 to Bedford, Virginia, so she could live in the shadow of the Peaks of Otter. She was extremely dedicated to Church work, serving as Elder at Bedford Presbyterian Church. And until her illness, she was extremely active in the community serving as an Auxiliary Volunteer at the Bedford Memorial Hospital, working for decades with the Bedford chapter of the Red Cross and with the Local Christian Ministries. Surviving are her sons, Jonathan Foster Perry of Los Angeles, CA, Atlas Joseph Perry, Jr. of Yanceyville, NC; and a sister, Nancy Palmer Tribble of Dublin. Funeral services will be held at the graveside at Green Hill Cemetery in Altavista on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 2:30 pm. Edward J. Schultz, 84 of Huddleston, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at his residence. He was born on Thursday, December 6, 1928 in Newark, NJ, a son of the late Anthony Schultz and Pauline Yunovicius Schultz . he was also preceded in death by his wife, wife, Ruth Tanajes Schultz. Ed was born in Newark, NJ and grew up in Kearney, joined U. S. Army and served in World War II during the occupation of Germany as a Judo instructor and communications specialist. Upon returning home, he studied electronics and started his own business, Coastwide Communications in Neptune City, NJ. He retired and moved to Huddleston, VA to the peace and quiet of his Smith Mountain Lake Home. He was a member of Patmos United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, the Saunders Fire Department and called bingo at the Moose Lodge. He will be missed terribly by his family & friends. Surviving is his daughter, Leslie Suhonen & husband, Matti of Kuopio, Finland; his son, Stephen Schultz & Marian of Brick, NJ; his best friends, his pups, Gypsy & Spotty as well as two grandsons, Anssi & Janne Suhonen. Ruth Foutz Crouch, 75 of Bedford, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born on Sunday, August 29, 1937 in Pulaski County, a daughter of the late Oakey L. Foutz and Rachael Watson Foutz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willys Sherwood Crouch. She was a retired manager of D. Reynolds Clothing Store after many years of faithful service and was a member of the Women of the Moose #1005 and Main Street United Methodist Church. She was lovingly known as the “Pie Lady” of Bedford and also a masterful seamstress to all. Surviving are her sons, Edward V. Crouch & wife, Donna; Jeffery N. Algie Blankenship Mayhew, 74, of Bedford passed away Saturday, April 13, 2013. She was born on August 18, 1938 in Bedford County. She was the daughter of the late Amos and Florence D. Blankenship. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William W. Mayhew. Algie was a graduate of Moneta High School class of 1957. She was a member of Morgan’s Baptist Church and the Lady Sunshine Sunday school class. She was employed as an optical assistant for various opticians. Virginia Pete Parker Farley, 85, of Bedford went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, April 5, 2013. Born June 3, 1927, in Bedford, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Cora Parker. Virginia was retired from Belding Corticelli where she dutifully worked for 47 years. She was a member of the Bedford Elks Lodge #2844. She adored being outdoors, working in the yard and taking in the splendor of the Peaks of Otter. She was an avid gardener and just a glimpse of her yard revealed her enormous “green thumb.” She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing delicious meals for her family. She was also and avid reader – of the newspaper, magazines and especially natural health journals. Filled with compassion and interest in others, Virginia made friends easily and maintained contact with many. She had a beautiful and distinctive handwriting and delighted in corresponding with friends and family. She was a generous and loving person and found pleasure in doing for others. Virginia was also a devout Christian and followed Dr. Jonathan Falwell and the music ministries of Charles Billingsley, without exception. Virginia is survived by her husband, Carlton Rucker Farley; three children, Sylvia Caldwell and her husband, Terry, Tony Farley and Lisi McFadden and her husband, Johnny; two grandchildren, Cherri Terry and Tracy Wilson and her husband, Doug; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Terry, Zachary Wilson and Marlee Wilson. Additional survivors are her beloved sister, Dale North; a special niece, Shirley Cheek and her husband Bobby; a lifelong friend, Flo Bernard; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was born on Tuesday, September 30, 1924 in Prince Edward County, a son of the late Thomas H. McLaughlin Sr. and Erma Craghead McLaughlin. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Mark McLaughlin and a son-in-law, Rufus Orange. He was a retired carman at N & W Railroad and was a member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church. Joyce Chancellor Wright, 81 of Bedford passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was born on Sunday, June 7, 1931 in Waco, TX, a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Chancellor and Lucile Gassaway Chancellor. She was a graduate of Baylor University. In her community activities in Bedford, she especially enjoyed her hospital Auxiliary service and the Bible class she taught for twenty years at her church, Bedford Presbyterian. Mildred Dephine Updike Broughman was born on June 13, 1922 in Bedford, VA, the daughter of Frank Bennett Updike and Lessie Gertrude Phelps Updike. She died Sunday, March 10, 2013. She was the last survivor of ten siblings: Thelma, Marvin, Helen (Lemon Cadd Davis), Eva (Martin), Gerald, Max, Grace (Davis Jenkins), Doris (Whorley Goad), and Sherman. She lived most of her life in Virginia, where she retired from the American Viscose Corporation in Front Royal in the 70′s. Survivors include many nieces, nephews, and dear friends: Dorothy Lemon Shell, Bobby and Sylvia Lemon, Otis Martin, Leona and Berkley St. Clair, Reggie and Linda Updike, Joe and Judy Updike, Phil and Tina Updike, David and JJ Updike, Stephen Updike, Maxine Updike, Charles Davis, Paul Davis, Carlene and Jay Jackson, Ron Goad, Larry Updike, Charlotte Updike, Delores McDonald, and Glen Updike, Doug and Wanda Dellis, and Marian Burnette. She was preceded in death by her first husband Robert Wendling, whom she married in 1943, and by Lloyd Broughman, whom she married in 1958. She donated her body to the Virginia Anatomical Institute. James “Jimmy” Vance Scott, 93 of Fayetteville, NC passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the Elks National Home in Bedford, VA. He was born on March 28, 1919 in Fayetteville, NC, a son of the late Jerry and Elizabeth Draughon Scott. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Scott and a son, Charles Vance Scott . He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he was member of the Calvin Sunday School Class. He loved his church and was dedicated to his family and friends. He was also a loving husband and caring father. He was a member of the Knights of Phythias, where he served as Grand Chancellar Knights of Pythias Lodge of North Carolina. He received the Knights of the Golden Spur award and the Governor’s award. He was the 100th Grand Chancellar of Grand Lodge of North Carolina from 1971- 72 and a D. O. K. K. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He served on the board of elections for the County and also received the Cross Military Service medal for the United Daughters of the Confederacy. He was a member of the Elks National Lodge, a member of the Pythias Cumberland fishing lodge. He loved fishing with all his friends. He will be remembered as a gentleman who was kind, dependable and honest. Jimmy was active in the automobile business for many years. He is survived by a daughter, Ann S. Cook and husband, Keith of Bedford, VA; a grandson, Brian K. Cook and his wife, Ginger and granddaughter, Lauren of Roanoke, VA; two sisters, Katherine Baird of Lumberton, NC and Ann Tolar of Goldsboro, NC and many great nieces and nephews. A service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville, NC on Friday, March 29 with visitation at 1 PM in the parlor and funeral to follow in the chapel at 2 PM with John Coker, Jr., officiating. She was also preceded in death by a son, Randal Scott Lantz and a brother, Buster Hale. Edna Love Heptinstall of Huddleston passed away March 20, 2013, at Thomasville Medical Center in Thomasville, NC. She was born February 6, 1926, in Chilhowie, VA, a daughter of the late Daniel and Josephine Love. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Heptinstall; brothers Bob Love, Reid Love, Joe Love and Bill Love; and sisters Elizabeth Love, Tootsie Love, and Martha Lee Edmondson. She retired from teaching at the high school level in the Bedford County School System after 27 years. For most of the years that followed, she operated the family-owned Heptinstall Grocery in Huddleston with her husband, Kenneth Heptinstall (including following his death in 1991). Since 2010 she lived at the Stratford independent living home in High Point, NC, where she loved playing bingo and the company of her little dog, Sophie. She was a devoted member of Mentow Baptist Church for most of her life, and a dedicated and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She also loved to cook, sew, and listen to the music that her husband, Kenneth played on guitar. She is survived by her daughters, Myra Russell and husband Kermit, and Edna Dickerson and husband Dave; brother, Jack Love and wife Dorothy; sister, Joyce Snapp; grandson, Kenneth Quarles and Victoria Eaton; granddaughter, Joanna Laizure and husband Casey; step-granddaughter, Terri Holt and husband Eddie; great-granddaughter, Julia Mya Laizure; and step-great-grandsons, Morgan and Parker Laizure. Clinton Carl Craghead, 89 of Moneta, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013 at Runk & Pratt Nursing Home, Hardy, VA. He was born on Tuesday, October 23, 1923 in Bedford County, a son of the late Joseph Bruce Craghead and Lilly Lipscomb Craghead. He was also preceded in death by his three brothers and three sisters. He was a Salesman with Murray & Bolling Chevrolet for thirty-three years, having retired in 1988 and was a member of Morgans Baptist Church and the Bedford Rifle Greys. He was also a veteran of the U. S. Army15th Infantry 29th Division having served in the European Theatre during World War II where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. Surviving is his wife, Dorothy Alice Dooley Craghead; two daughters, Twyla C. Crisp & husband, Jerry, Sheree C. Also surviving are her furry grandchildren Joshua, Jeremiah, and Dan, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.Martha, in earlier years, was an LPN at the Old Grace Memorial Hospital and often commented on what the operating room was like in earlier times. She was also a quality inspector for a textile mill in Brookneal. After marriage, she became a homemaker and served her community church (Bethlehem United Methodist Church) in many capacities. She was honored to be a charter member of the United Methodist Women. In more recent years, due to ailing health, she attended Timberlake United Methodist Church with her family. Her greatest joys came from serving her God by ministering to the needs of her grateful family and friends for many years.The family is grateful to the various health care providers, Gentiva, Amedisys, Bedford Medical, Gastroenterology Associates, Lynchburg Hematology Oncology and Centra Hospice. Family visitation will be Sunday, March 3, from 3:00-5:00 pm at Updike Funeral Home in Bedford with funeral service at Pisgah Presbyterian Church in Goode at 11:00 am on March 4 followed by interment at the church cemetery. Russell Lynn Giles, 53 of Thaxton, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2013 at the Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born on Friday, October 16, 1959 in Ft. Meade, MD, a son of Kenneth Ray Giles & special friend Doris Myers and the late Marianne Margot Brehm Giles. He was also preceded in death by a brother, James Giles and a sister Susan Ann Creasy. He was a retired U.S. Army veteran having served for 20 years. In addition to his father he is survived by his wife Tina Marie Tullis Giles, 2 sons; Matthew Giles of Thaxton and Ronnie Giles of Christiansburg, a sister, Cynthia J. Shaulis of Lynchburg, his mother-in-law, Janice Tullis of Bedford, his sister-in-law, Paulette Tullis of Bedford, his brother-in-law Cliff Tullis of Birmingham, AL. and a special dog, Cali. Military honors will be accorded on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 3:00 pm at Updike Funeral Home. Robert Lee Overstreet, Sr., 86 of Bedford, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2013 at the Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born on Saturday, November 6, 1926 in Bedford County, a son of the late Charles Lewis Overstreet and Mary Magdalene Dooley. He was also preceded in death by a son Robert Lee Overstreet Jr.. He was a retired employee of the Bedford Weaving Mill and a 13 year U.S. Navy veteran having served during World War II and Korea. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Witt Overstreet, 3 daughters; Roberta O. Little & fiance, Kenny of Bedford, Leanna S. Clark of Lynchburg, Linda J. Peck of Lynchburg; a son, Samuel G. Overstreet & wife Debi of Roanoke, 10 Grandchildren, Several Great-Grandchildren and 1 Sister. A Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Greenwood Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating. Arthur Carl McDilda, 81 of Moneta, passed away Friday, February 22, 2013 at the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born on Friday, February 12, 1932 in Norfolk, VA, a son of the late Clarence Curtis McDilda and Ada Morehead McDilda. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter Margaret Wingfield & her husband Marshall Wingfield. He was a retired technician of the Otis Elevator Company and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Surviving are his wife Martha Olga McDilda, 3 sons; Carl A. McDilda & wife Charli, Alan R. McDilda & wife, Patricia, Michael R McDilda, and a brother, Dwight C. McDilda all of Moneta, 7 Grandchildren and 4 Great-Grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 25, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Radford Baptist Church with Pastor Karl Hofheinz, Rev. Carl Butcher and Rev. David Whitehurst officiating. Buford R. “Butterbean” Tuck, 88 of Moneta, passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at his residence. He was born on Sunday, November 2, 1924 in Bedford County, a son of the late Grover Lee Tuck and Mary Ethel Myers Tuck. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Ethel Davis Byrd, Berdie Lee Byrd and Ruth Irene Byrd and his son-in-law, Randall Rogers. He was a retired employee of Rubatex and was a member of Radford Baptist Church. Surviving is his wife, Virginia Mae Morgan Tuck; a daughter, Shelby T. Rogers and a grandson, Scott Rogers, both of Bedford Co. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 22, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Radford Baptist Church with Rev. Karl Hofheinz officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 4 until 7 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
