Obituary of Gerald Guy Smith

Gerald Guy "Sam" Smith, 70 of  Big Island, passed away Monday, May 15, 2017 at Lynchburg Health & Rehab.  He was born on Wednesday, March 26, 1947  in Bedford County, a son of the late Andrew C. Smith and Ruby Cash Smith.  He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

He was a retired Custodian at Boonsboro Elementary School and a member Sedalia Baptist Church. He enjoyed his friends at the Big Island Hunt & Fish Club and he loved Bluegrass music.  He was always willing to help anyone who needed help.

He is survived by his sons, Gerald Wayne Smith & wife, Tracy of Bedford, Greg Smith of Bedford; daughter, Kasey Wiedhold & husband, Jason of Ohio; a brother, Nelson V. Smith of Big Island; sister, Doris Dalton of Big Island, twin-sister Gloria (Sally) Cheatham & husband, Robert of Big Island; brother-in-law Irvin Hodges of Roanoke; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 3:00 pm, at Hunting Creek Church Cemetery with Rev. Mike Jones officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 17, 2017 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Bedford.
