Obituary of Marjorie Givens Cooper

Marjorie Givens Cooper, 87, of Moneta, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the University of Virginia Medical Center.  She was born on September 24, 1929 in Harlan County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Rex Wiley Givens and Anna Mae Brown Givens.  


Marge taught in the Bedford County School System for thirty-seven years, starting at Moneta High School. There she met her future husband Buzz who ran the country store next door. She retired from Staunton River High School in 1987. She was a member of Morgans Baptist Church where she taught the Ladies’ Sunshine Class for sixty years. She also served as a charter member of the Bedford Public Library System and was actively involved with its Board of Trustees, serving two four-year terms.


She is survived by her husband, George Nathaniel Cooper, Sr.; her son, George N. Cooper, Jr. & wife Gloria of Moneta; her daughter, Anne C. Long & husband Gary of Moneta; her grandchildren, Jennifer Cooper Stuckey & husband Chris, Nate Cooper & wife Stacy, Beth Cooper, Hunter Long & wife Faith; her great grandchildren, Olivia Stuckey, Joel Stuckey, Campbell Cooper, Charlie Ann Cooper & Parker Long; her sister, Peggy Caldwell of Narrows.


In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Morgans Baptist Church, 2086 Morgans Church Road, Bedford, VA 24523 or a charity of your choice.


The family will receive friends beginning at 1 PM on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Morgans Baptist Church and a funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM with Rev. Jason Arthur & Rev. Steve Parker officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.   Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
