Abigail Girard Ashwell, 86 of Huddleston, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2011 at The Summit Health & Rehab. Center. She was born on Wednesday, October 29, 1924 in Erie, PA, a daughter of the late Robert L. Girard and Catherine Wright Girard. She was also preceded in death by husband, Davis Rudolph Ashwell, a grandson, James Raymond "Jamie" Ashwell and a sister, Pauline Girard Ricke. She was a school teacher with the Bedford County School System having retired after 32 years. She was also a member of Huddleston United Methodist Church. Surviving are her sons, Robert H. Ashwell & wife, Ellen, Raymond D. Ashwell & wife, Galen, Andrew G. Ashwell, all of Huddleston; William C. Ashwell of Lynchburg; a brother, Hamilton Girard and eight grandchildren. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider American Cancer Society, 2316 Atherholt Road, Lynchburg, VA 24501. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Huddleston United Methodist Church with Rev. David Bayse, Rev. Dr. Carl H. Douglass, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 4 until 6 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Huddleston.
