Our Lord and Savior came to take "Papa" Jack home to heaven on Tuesday, August 30, 2016. He was surrounded by family as he left to enter his heavenly home. Jack was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-one years, Ruby D. Hawkins and his father & mother, Enos & Lois M. Hawkins. In his early years of work, Jack trained at Piggly Wiggly on Main Street in Lynchburg to be a meat cutter. This is where he met the love of his life, Ruby. Later he worked at K-Mart Foods on Wards Road in Lynchburg. The majority of his career was spent at Big Star at Pittman Plaza in Lynchburg, When Big Star closed he worked a few years for Bedford County Public Schools, but his trade of meat cutting called him to return and he worked at Food Lion until his retirement. Jack enjoyed coaching his children in football and baseball when they were younger. He really enjoyed playing cards with his best friends, Stoney Deschene and his wife, Donna. He made many friends that lasted a lifetime. His hobbies included playing jokes and pranks with his friends and family, fishing and going to Karmyn and McKenzie's softball games. He is survived by his children, Debbie H. Akers, Gary A. Hawkins & Patrick W. Hawkins & wife, Shannon, all of Forest; his grandchildren, Kristy A. Hawkins, Triston P. Akers, Kendal A. Akers, McKenzie K. Hawkins; great grandchildren, Karmyn C. Hawkins, Maddison A. Abbitt, Daisha R. Poe, Trinity J. Poe and Naomi K. Akers. Jack will be dearly missed by his family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Friday, September 2, 2016 at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford.
