Obituary of John Mason Ashwell

John Mason Ashwell, 74 of Hardy, passed on to his Lord on Monday, September 26, 2016 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was born on Wednesday, March 4, 1942 in Bedford County, a son of the late Jack Ashwell and Scottie Foster Ashwell. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Doris Bobbitt and Reva Bobbitt. He was former employee of Rubatex Corporation and was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, lawn work and nature in general. He was also a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in Vietnam. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Lipscomb Ashwell; his brothers, Claude Ashwell & wife, Ruth of DE, Jimmy Ashwell & wife, Etta of Lynchburg; his sisters, Edna Seward of TN, Sarah Bumpus & husband, Parker of TN, Faye Wuergler & husband, Melvin of Moneta, Charlona DeLong & husband, Danny Wayne of Moneta; step-daughter, Stacey Woodford & husband, Roger Dick & their sons, Ian, Quinn & Nathan of North Myrtle Beach, SC as well as several nieces, nephews & close friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Rev. Melvin Harris officiating. Military honors will be given by American Legion Post# 16. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
