Obituary of Laura Hicks Morgan

Laura Hicks Morgan, 98 of Moneta, passed away Monday, December 19, 2016 at Oakwood Health & Rehab. Center. She was born on Sunday, April 14, 1918 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Warren Otis Hicks and Ethel Johnston Hicks. She was also preceded in death by her husband of fifty-seven years, James Nicholas Morgan, her son, James Gary Morgan, her brothers, Horace J. Hicks, William "Bill" Hicks, Glenn Hicks & her sisters, Edith Krokowski, Helen Johnson & Marie Allen. Laura worked at Sam Moore Furniture for a time and retired from Rubatex Corporation. She was a member of Morgans Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School in earlier years. Laura loved tending her flowers and working in her yard. She lived in the Morgan homeplace since she was 16 years old and was like a second mother to many nieces & nephews that visited throughout the years. She is survived by her daughter, Caroll M. Gross of Moneta; her grandsons, Thomas Nicholas Leftwich of Salem, Patrick Morgan Gross & wife, Britney of GA; a granddaughter, Tara Morgan Sheets & husband, Todd of Huddleston; two great grandsons, Grayson & Griffin Sheets; her sisters, Virginia Hicks Moul of Woodbridge, Dorothy Hicks Palmer of Vinton; her daughter-in-law, Bertie W. Morgan as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family requests that those wishing to make memorials consider Morgans Baptist Church, 2086 Morgans Church Road, Bedford, VA 24523. The family will receive friends beginning at 12 noon on Thursday, December 22, 2016 and a funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm at Morgans Baptist Church with Rev. Jason Arthur and Rev. Rick Mallory officiating. Interment will follow in Morgans Baptist Church Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
