Carey Goggin Hale, 87 of Bedford passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2017 in Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born October 29, 1929 in Bedford County, a son of the late Carey William Hale and Nannie Witt Hale. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Ayers Hale as well as one brother and three sisters. He was retired from Rubatex Corporation, did auto body work for Peaks Motors and in his own body shop, Hale’s Garage and was a member of Quaker Baptist Church. He was also a member of the National Guard. He is survived by two daughters, Debbie H. Merritt & husband, Wesley, Kathy H. Watts, all of Bedford; a grandson, Dustin A. Watts; two sisters, Mary Ann Wilson of Bedford, Elizabeth Everidge of Lynchburg and his brother-in-law, Tom Ayers. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider Quaker Baptist Church, 4665 Chestnut Fork Road, Bedford, or Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center, 1701 Thomson Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24501. A funeral service will be held at the graveside at Quaker Baptist Church Cemetery at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 3, 2017 with Rev. David Timma and Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
