







Obituary of Betty Lou Nance Layne
Betty Lou Nance Layne, 85, of Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at Centra Bedford Hospice House. She was born on Wednesday, December 6, 1939 to the late Grady Nance & Mary Hubbard Nance. Betty was also preceded in death by her sisters, Mildred Wilkerson & Edna Murray; brother, Henry Edward (P.D.) Nance & nephew, Thomas Gary Nance.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Roger Layne; daughter, Renee Burnley & her husband, Mark; sister, Sue (Mary Frances) Helenihi; nieces & nephews, Mary Thompson, Patricia Childress, Faye Eubank, Mike Wilkerson, Frannie Harker, Greg Helenihi & Clint Helenihi; several great nieces & nephews.
Betty worked as a Paralegal at Putney & Putney Law Office in Bedford, Va for 54 years. She also assisted Del. Lacey Putney at the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond, Va. She was a Sunday School teacher and choir director at Suck Spring Baptist Church. Her passion was flower gardening & serving the Lord. Betty loved planting flowers and shopping for flowers with her daughter. She loved nature especially birds. Betty loved to porch swing, drink coffee and sing to the Lord. She was always talking to Jesus and thanking him for her salvation even up till the end. Most importantly, she loved her family and her grandpups.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Pastor Michael Cox officiating. Interment will follow in Suck Spring Baptist Church Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
