Margaret Bowyer Whorley, 89 of Bedford, passed away Monday, July 20, 2026 at  Bedford County Nursing Home. She was born on Friday, February 12, 1937  in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Hilary M. Bowyer and Earle Davenport Bowyer.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Quarles Whorley, her brothers, James Bowyer, Bobby Bowyer, sisters, Laverne Mitchell, Esther Ashley (Robert), Shirley M. Bowyer, sisters-in-law, Ruby M. Whorley and JoAnne W. Bobbitt.

Margaret was a member of  Nicopolis Community Church. She was an amazing homemaker and was dedicated to her family and friends for the duration of her life.  She enjoyed tending to various agricultural pursuits including flower and vegetable gardens across the family farm.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon W. Overstreet (Dennis), Carol W. Key (Grant); her son, John M. Whorley; her granddaughters, Mandy O. Johnson (Brad), Ann Elizabeth Key (Aaron), Mary Margaret Key-Lasley (Tim); great grandchildren, Sadie, Maci & Grady Johnson; her sisters-in-law, Carleen Bowyer, Delores Bowyer; her brother-in-law, Marshall Mitchell  as well as numerous nieces & nephews. 

A special thank you to her wonderful caregivers at home, the staff at Bedford County Nursing Home and the Centra Hospice Nurses.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Bedford Humane Society, 829 Ole Turnpike Drive, Bedford, VA 24523 or the Alzheimers Association, 3831 Old Forest Road, Suite 7, Lynchburg, VA 24504.

The family will receive friends beginning at 11 AM on Friday, July 24, 2026 at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford and a funeral service will follow at 12 noon in the chapel with Pastor Phil Pelfrey and Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating.   Interment will follow in Nicopolis Community Church Cemetery.
