Aunt Fleda...my mom Lillian sister...when I was a little kid she gave me a big old hug cause the sisters asked me who was the youngest. I said Fleda..she asked why..I said cause you have the most beautiful hair...then came the hug......Aunt Fleda loved us cousins and whenever we were up in Bedford or she in Hampton she always had a joke to keep us kids laughing. Wish we lived closer but the distance made our visits special. At our family reunions in Clarksville Va. She and uncle Gam were always fun. Gam trying g to get in EVERY fame picture taken and Fleda shouting Gam get out of there. I'll always remember her and the other war time moms who lived months and years with their husbands away while they stayed here and took care of their families. My mom Lillian told me yesterday that it was a fact that EVERY DAY Gam was away in WW II
Fleda wrote him a letter. Every day. I hear ran a tight ship as a boss at the hospital..I bieve it and that's the kind of boss I like...get your jobs done right first..work hard then play hard.
I'll always remember..I was about 7 and Fleda had gotten a color TV. when we came in their door I didn't know what to make of that peacock on the tv in color.
We'll my Aunt Fleda raised children. ..my cousins..that turned out to be responsible citizens who have the same love she had for her family to all oy us and theirs.
Love and hugs to all my family there in Bedford.
Love Scott Harris

Fleda lives forever in my heart and brings a smile to my face and in my heart every time I think about the times I was there thru the years. I have her captured forever on many videos I shot from the mid eighties thru the 90s.
Family reunions of all the girls cutting up for photographs, while I was getting all the action and comments. the Lipfords' had a special love for the Hites.
Mom was so taken this afternoon when Scott, Ashleigh and I shared the news of Fleda's passing. She was flooded with memories and tears of times long passed, and a sister she loved.
She spoke of Grandpa Lipford offering Fleda a nickel if she would finish her meal, and Mom begging him to give her that offer. Or the time that Fleda had some really nice clothes on HER side of the closet, and Mom wore one of here outfits one day to school, and tried to hide from Fleda by going to different floors at Newport News High..and a friend of Fleda recognized the outfit...
My visits in the 50s after riding the J Class Steam Train up there from Suffolk, meals in the kitchen, Fleda heading out to work, Gam doing the same, pancakes warmed the heart, them coming home after a night out at the Lodge...I cannot begin to print the jokes she used to whisper into my ear....nor our belching contests...Harry did you have to put that down here? yes I did.
Mom and I came up when Bo was born...Mom was there when Fleda had Frank, and Fleda was there when Mom had me. I talked of that unique bond with Mom this afternoon. I think Dan Fogelburg wrote a song about "twin sons from different mothers".
Fleda...you were the one and only....Mom was glad we were coming up to pay our respects..and she wanted so much to be there...and I told her you already are...and forever will be her sister..no one can take those memories away. Home, Clarksville, Bedford and beyond.

Our thought and prayers are with you in the loss of a wonderful person. When I married Jody she welcomed me warmly and let me know I was one of the family. My favorite quote: on our wedding day outside of the church after the ceremony, Fleda looks and Jody and I and said, " I hope you have 6 boys"! She was a joy. She will be missed.

Fleda, Niece Jennifer Harris Hogan and daughter Donna Collier at The Peaks....
Not sure if you know that the name "Fleda" means "Quick on her feet"..& this totally describes my Aunt Fleda...what a hoot she was!! Quick witted and just plain hilarious. She was always a blast to be around and I loved every minute I had with her. From being a good cook (apple pie baked in a brown bag), hysterical laughing and never a dull moment around Aunt Fleda...wonderful, wonderful memories. What a joy and a privilege to be called Fleda's niece!

Fleda was a very special woman.
She was direct. You could always count on her to tell you exactly what she thought. And I respected her for that.
Fleda was feisty. You could always count on her to stand up for herself. And I loved her for that.
Fleda was fun. You could always count on her to say the unexpected. She made me smile and laugh with her humor and comments, and I enjoyed being with her.
But more than anything else, Fleda was a woman who loved and was proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and her sons-in-law and daughters-in-law. And even her extended family. And we all loved her for that.
Fleda made the world a more interesting place. Fleda was special. And I will always love her .
