Obituary of Dewey John Fifer
Dewey John Fifer, 90 of Forest, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born on October 21, 1926 in Bedford County, a son of the late Edward Gardner Fifer and Patria Elizabeth Austin Fifer. He was preceded in death by six brothers, William, Edward, Dean, Ryan, Kenneth and Larry Fifer;
five sisters, May Fifer, Evelyn Brown, Margaret Tiller, Audrey Massie and Patricia Casey.
He was a retired hydro plant operator at the City of Bedford power plant at Snowden, VA. He was a member of Sedalia Baptist Church where he was a former deacon, and a US Navy Veteran of World War II and the D-Day Invasion.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ethel Wilson Fifer. A daughter, Carroll J. McDearmon (John) of Richmond; a son, Glenn M. Fifer of Spout Spring; granddaughters, Melanie Mofield (Carey) and Megan F. Smith (George), grandsons, Brandon Scott Burnett and Desmond J. Fifer; great-granddaughter, Alexea Mofield; great-grandson, Colton Mofield; sisters, Amy Burks of Bedford, Glenna Putney and Gayle Burks of Big Island and numerous nieces, nephews and family.
The family would like to thank members of the PCU at Lynchburg General Hospital for their kindness and gracious care during his stay.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at 11:00 am at Sedalia Baptist Church in Big Island, VA with Rev. Mike Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Sedalia Baptist Church Cemetery with full Military Rights conducted by American Legion Post # 16. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:30 am - 11:00 am. and other times at the residence, 70 Horizon Dr., Forest. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sedalia Baptist Church Building Fund,1072 Charlemont Rd., Big Island, VA 24526. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
