Obituary of Samuel Orie Mayhew

Samuel "Sam" Orie Mayhew, 85 years old, of  Bedford, VA passed away on Monday, August 7, 2017.  He was born on Saturday, April 30, 1932. The son of the late James W. and Mary M. Mayhew of Bedford, VA.  He was also preceded in death by 9 brothers; Roy, Jesse, Guy, Clarence, Clyde, "Red", Bobby, Billy, L.J.; 3 sisters, Doris, Betty and Barbara. Sam is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Nancy Rice Mayhew; in-laws, Ann Journell, of Roanoke, Claire Rice, of Florida; a godson, Matthew McCabe of Troutville, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

Sam retired from Coca Cola Consolidated after 40 years of service. He also served in the United States Marines during the Korean War. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Bedford. He is also a member of the Bedford Moose Lodge and Bedford Breakfast Lions Club and a former member of the Bedford Elks Lodge and the Bedford Fire Department. Sam loved traveling and enjoyed NASCAR racing.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 11:00 am at Main Street United Methodist Church, Bedford with Rev. Wayne Murphy and Rev. Rick Ecklund officiating.  Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 8, 2017 from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
