Ethel Irene Hoffman Schickling, 96 of Bedford, VA passed away Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Woodhaven Nursing Home. She was born on Wednesday, May 27, 1914 in Baltimore, MD, a daughter of the late John H. Hoffman and Irene Buchanan Hoffman. She was also preceded in death by husband, Lynn Orvis Schickling Sr., son, Lynn O. Schickling Jr., sisters, Mary H. Moren and Louise H. Spickler and brothers, Warren Harding Hoffman and Wayne Buchanan Hoffman. She was a member of Thaxton Baptist Church and the Bedford Gideon Camp Auxiliary. Surviving are her son, Harry L. Schickling & wife Nan of Bedford, Grandchildren; Lynn O. Schickling III, Mauna S. Hair & husband Jeff, David Schickling & wife Cheryl; Great Grandchildren, Jennifer Hair, Suzanna Schickling, Tim Robinson and a Great Great Granddaughter, Savannah Schickling. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider Thaxton Baptist Church, 1067 Penicks Mill Road, Thaxton, VA 24174 or the Gideons International, P.O. Box 791, Bedford, VA 24523. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 31, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Updike Funeral Home Chapel, Bedford with Dr. Eldridge Cullum and Pastor Steve Dollar co-officiating. Interment will follow in Thaxton Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 12 noon until the time of the funeral service. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
