Susan Melanie Clarke, 36, of Bedford, passed away Friday, December 17, 2010 at her residence. She was born on Sunday, March 24, 1974 in Murfreesboro, TN, a daughter of Harvey Bragg Clarke and Willie Byrd Childress Clarke of Bedford. In addition to her mother and father, she is survived by her maternal grandmother, Mary P. Childress of Bedford; a brother and his wife, Dr. Christopher Andrew "Andy" Clarke & Julie Sergent Clarke and their children, Ellen O'Connor Clarke & Jack Clarke, all of Memphis, TN; a brother, David William Clarke of San Francisco, CA; several uncles and aunts, Timothy Childress & wife Cheryl of Forest; Patricia Childress of Bedford; Kenneth Childress & wife, Donna of Brentwood, TN; William Childress & wife Jeanette of Bedford; her caregiver, Donna DeGondea. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to The Salvation Army, 724 Dale Avenue, SE, Roanoke, VA 24013, Bedford Christian Ministries, 217 West Washington Street, Bedford, VA 24523 or Bedford Presbyterian Church, 105 West Main Street, Bedford, VA 24523. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 20, 2010 at 2 PM at Bedford Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Salley officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 1 PM until the time of the service in the fellowship hall at Bedford Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
