Obituary of Elizabeth Smith Hodges

Elizabeth "Betsy" Smith Hodges, 91 of  Bedford, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Bedford County Nursing Home.  She was born on Thursday, October 28, 1926  in Bedford County, a daughter of the late John Samuel Smith and Gladys Murray Smith.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, John William Hodges with whom she worked alongside on their beef cattle farm.

Betsy was a member of  Hickory Grove United Methodist Church for 79 years.  Over the years, she has served in many ways in the church including Lay Leader, Trustee and choir member.  She was an active member of the United Methodist Women having served as President and delegate to the UMW District.  Anytime there was something to be done at the church, Betsy was there to help.  She organized fund raisers, bake sales and meals.  If any members or neighbors were sick, she was there with a covered dish.  In her spare time, Betsy drove a school bus for Bedford County Public Schools and retired after fifteen years.  She was well loved by all of "her children."  

She is survived by her sons, Thomas W. Hodges & wife, Dianne of Lynchburg, Mark S. Hodges & wife, Julie of Bedford; her grandchildren, Jeff Hodges & wife, Jacquie, Sherrie Campbell & husband, Roger, Sam Hodges & wife, Ashley, Jesse Hodges, Adam Hodges & wife, Kim as well as eight great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.  

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Monday, June 18, 2018 at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 until 6 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
