Obituary of Harvey M. Mays

Harvey M. Mays, 71 of  Bedford, passed away Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.  He was born on Thursday, July 24, 1947  in Pittsylvania County, a son of the late Charles Perkins Mays and Gladys Lucille Newbern Mays.  

He was a Plant Manager at Gunnoe Sausage, a member of Brookhill Wesleyan Church and a U. S. Army Veteran having served in Vietnam.
  
He is survived by his wife of forty years, Janet Updike Mays; a daughter, Beverly Matthews & her husband, Donald of Greenville, NC; a son, Jamie Mays of Richmond;  his brothers, Perk Mays of Blairs, Jackie Mays of Forest; his sisters, Ellen Brumfield of Chatham, Fannie McDaniel of Apex, NC, Sarah Farson of Vernon Hill;  a grandson, Adam Haraway; his godchildren, Alden Short, Jarrett Short, Alainey Drane.  

The family requests that those wishing to make memorials consider God's Pit Crew, 2499 North Main Street, Danville, VA 24540 or Brookhill Wesleyan Church, 1043 Cifax Road, Forest, VA 24551.  

The family would especially like to thank the Gunnoe Family for their kindness during Harvey's illness.  

The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 on Monday, August 13, 2018 at Brookhill Wesleyan Church and a funeral service will follow at 11 AM with Rev. Brian Cook & Rev. Rodney Jackson officiating.  Interment, with military honors by American Legion Post # 16 will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.  Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
