Obituary of Dorothy Carper Poindexter

Dorothy Mae Poindexter, 71, of Bedford, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 5, 2019 while residing at Runk & Pratt Assisted Senior Living Community. She was born on June 16, 1947 in Bedford, VA to the late Leonard and Margaret Williams Carper. 

Dorothy’s life journey took her from Bedford, VA to Washington, DC; East Orange, NJ and finally a return home to Bedford in 1992 where she married her husband the late Elton Poindexter. 

Dorothy worked at Waterview Nursing Home in Cedar Grove, NJ for approximately 15 years. She returned back to Bedford where she continued her work in caregiving at a nursing home in Vinton, VA and also became a care provider for DePaul Family Services for approximately 22 years. 

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Keisha M. Williams of Atlanta, GA. She also leaves behind one brother, Thomas (Janet) Carper of Bedford, VA and four sisters; Barbara Pennix of Bedford; Ruth (Glen) Austin and Emma (Roger) Witcher, both of Evington, VA; and Gracie Bell of Richmond, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

Dorothy was preceded in death by her daughters, Kim Carper and Angela Carper and her brothers Leonard Carper, Jr. and James Albert Carper. 

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 AM on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford by Rev. Dr. Henry A. Henderson officiating.
