Janie Kendrick Franklin, 92 of Huddleston passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 6, 2011 at Campbell Rest Home. She was born on Friday, December 13, 1918 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Roland Turner Kendrick and Margaret Douglas Cassidy Kendrick. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Roy Franklin, six brothers, Russell Kendrick, Irvin "Freck" Kendrick, Albert "Sam" Kendrick, Leo Kendrick, Carlton Kendrick, Millard Kendrick as well as five sisters, Mamie Goode, Melva Morgan, Elma Tuck, Gracie Chewning, Agnes Saunders. She was the last of a family of twelve. Janie was a retired seamstress at Moneta Dress Factory and was a member of Palestine Baptist Church. She also enjoyed sewing and quilting as well as cooking and gardening and was well known for her homemade biscuits. Surviving is her loving daughter, Jessie Rae Combs & her husband, John of Roanoke and her granddaughter whom she adored, Juliana Combs. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider the American Heart/Stroke Association, 4504 Starkey Road, SW, Roanoke, VA 24018. The family would like to offer special thanks and gratitude to the staff of Campbell Rest Home for their care and devotion for the past eight years. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Rev. Melvin Harris officiating. Interment will follow in Palestine Church Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday after 1 PM and the family will receive friends from 5 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
