I was so saddened to hear that Gary passed away. My son was at BC for awhile and he and Gary were close to the same age. Gary kept an eye on Derek for me and was such a great friend. Always happy, smiling. Loved it when we brought Derek’s weenie dog CoCo to visit. Rest In Peace Gary. I’ve always thought about you and your big smile and happy personality. God Bless your kindness. Love and prayers to his family and friends and the ones who cared for Gary. It will be an empty whole without your smile.

We got to know Gary when we visited my brother who was also a resident at BC. We affectionately referred to him as the "BC Greeter" He was always ready to say hello and share a smile. If I was visiting without my husband he would always ask me where he was and vice versa. After my brother passed away we continued to stop in and see Gary when we were on our way through the Roanoke area. We were saddened to learn of his passing. He will be missed.

Gary was a one-of-a kind fellow. He had a very good memory, and would always ask me "how are the girls?" whenever I saw him. He was genuinely interested in everyone, and we used to call him the "mayor of the Brian Center" because he was always there to greet and make new family and visitors feel welcome. One of my fondest memories was taking Gary outside for our daily trip to get equipment. He loved to get out into the sunshine and would keep asking when could we go until I could find a few minutes to go grab him in the wheelchair and go! He was a special young man.
