James Edward "Ed" Angel, 84 of Bedford, passed away Monday, March 21, 2011 at Carriage Hill Retirement Home. He was born on Wednesday, March 9, 1927 in Bedford County, a son of the late Augustus M. Angel and Nellie E. Witt Angel. He was a retired employee of Wheelabrator Corporation where he was Plant Superintendent, was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, a veteran of World War II having served in the U. S. Navy, a member of the Bedford Moose Lodge # 1897, and B. P. O. Elks Lodge # 321. Following Ed's retirement, he was employed as a funeral assistant at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Surviving is his wife, Almeta Craghead Angel; three daughters, Sandra F. Angel & husband, Keith Campbell of Bedford; Brenda A. Phillips & husband, Bob of Myrtle Beach, SC; Sherry A. Marker of Granger, IN; a son, Mark E. Angel of Roanoke; three sisters, Audrey A. Witt, Emilie A. Citty, both of Bedford; Rachel A. Coward of Covington, LA; a brother, Allen M. Angel of Lynchburg, as well as ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The family requests those wishing to make memorials consider donations in Ed's name to Medi Home Health & Hospice, 5369 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, VA 24019 or the Alzheimers Association, P. O. Box 823, Lynchburg, VA 24505. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 25, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Main Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Les Trail and Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford and other times at the home of Sandra Angel, 1235 Windsor Drive, Bedford, VA 24253.
