Richard Mark Meyer, 53, of Bedford, Virginia, died December 25, 2020 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was an Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) and Lead Mechanic with Piedmont Airlines in Roanoke. In 2019 he received the coveted Piedmont President’s Award. Despite battling cancer multiple times and other health complications he continued to set an example and be a light to those around him. He was known for being dependable, knowledgeable and personal. He always cared about why others were having a good or bad day and always wanted to help when needed. He was a most giving, thoughtful, and caring person. He always thought of others first before himself. He loved helping others. He enjoyed spending time with family. Christmas was his favorite time of the year. He was born June 11, 1967 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of the late Robert George and Eva Marie (Littlepage) Meyer. He is preceded in death by his wife: Margaret Theresa (Goerl) Meyer. He was a 1985 graduate of Mehlville Senior High School in Mehlville, Missouri. He attended St. Petersburg College in Florida, and graduated from the National Aviation Academy in Clearwater, Florida, where he received his Airframe and Powerplant License. He is survived by his loving domestic partner, Denise Gardner Lyons of Bedford, Virginia; four step-children: Nancy (John) Lund of Brooklyn, Ohio; Katie (Jason) Phipps of New Port Richey, Florida; Lynne (Carl) Borkowski of Clearwater, Florida; Katie (Jason) Phipps of New Port Richey, Florida; and David Savage of Buena Vista, Virginia; two sisters: Terri (Bill) Schrader of Hillsboro, Missouri; Linda (Matthew) Wynn of Maryland Heights, Missouri; a brother: Robert Meyer of Port Richey, Florida; seven step-grandchildren: Tegan Nohr of New Bern, North Carolina; Baillie Phipps of New Port Richey, Florida; Addison Phipps of New Port Richey, Florida; Joseph Ferguson of Clearwater, Florida; Doug (DJ) Ferguson of Clearwater, Florida; Kaylee Savage of Huddleston, Virginia; David (Bud) Savage of Huddleston, Virginia; a niece: Mary Wynn of St. Louis, Missouri; a nephew: Matthew Wynn II of St. Louis, Missouri; a brother-in-law: Alan Goerl of Denton, Texas; Denise’s son, George (Sarah) Gardner and their children Isaiah, Mariah and Elijah Gardner of South Hill, Virginia; and numerous kind and loving friends including longtime school friend John Billings of St. Louis, Missouri. He will be deeply missed and remembered forever. He was preceded in death by an older brother, Michael George Meyer, and an older sister, Wanda Ann Meyer, of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2021, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Updike Funeral Home, 1140 West Lynchburg Salem Turnpike, in Bedford, Virginia, 24523.
