Lawson Earl Hughes, 89 of Bedford, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Oakwood Health & Rehab. Center. He was born on Saturday, December 24, 1921 in Bedford County, a son of the late Frank Hughes and Hattie Creasey Hughes. he was also preceded in death by wife of sixty-seven years, Isabelle Nichols Hughes, and his son-in-law, Lawrence E. Buscher Jr. as well as four sisters, Ruby Martin, Dorothy White, Frances Clyde, Faye Witt and one brother, John Hughes. He was retired from C & P Telephone with over thirty-five years of service. He was a World War II Veteran having served in the U. S. Coast Guard on the warship, the SS Spencer. He was also a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church for over forty years. Surviving is his daughter, Dianne Hughes Buscher of Kernersville, NC, his granddaughter, April Buscher & her husband, Tobias Gloth of Houston, TX; and his only surviving sister, Peggy H. Bays & husband, J. B. of Bedford. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider Bethesda United Methdist Church, c/o Claudine K. Preston, 1355 Preston Mill Road, Huddleston, VA 24104. The family would like to thank the staff of Oakwood Health & Rehab. Center for their care and concern. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Bethesda United Methodist Church with Rev. Tammy Franklin officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 PM until the time of the service at the church. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
