Please share a memory of Ruth to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ruth Watson Shade, 96 of Bedford, went home peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 after living a full life on her farm that was so dear to her. She was born on Sunday, March 15, 1925 in Moneta, VA, a daughter of the late Josephus B. Watson and Ada Florence Craighead Watson. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Nevin Lee Shade, daughter, Carol Lee Menkal and granddaughter, Rachel Jean Menkal.
She is survived by her daughter, Faith Badeaux (Dave) of Sunset Beach, NC; her son, Nevin Mark Shade of Germany along with nieces, nephews and a large family of friends and caregivers.
Ruth graduated from Moneta High School in 1942 and went to work in Washington, DC to join the war effort. Wanting more, she attended the Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing and joined the Navy Nurse Cadet Corps in 1945. This led her to Portsmouth Navy Hospital where she met the love of her life. Soon after the war ended, they married and she moved to her new home in California with husband, Lee Shade. She raised three children, continued her educational pursuits and wrote many beautiful poems for English Class. Her poems have been published throughout the years. She was also active with Ladies Community Organizations. Unfortunately this beautiful life changed when Lee was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. They moved back to Bedford on the farm she always loved with her parents. Together they raised horses, cows, goats and several faithful dogs.
Her generosity remains well known in the Bedford, Lynchburg and Roanoke communities. She opened her home to many families who needed a home. She supported numerous missionaries throughout the world dedicated to spreading God's word. Her strong faith guided her throughout her entire life.
The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider a charity of your choice.
