Obituary of James Witt

James Calvin Witt, 81 of Bedford, passed away Monday, April 11, 2011 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born on Tuesday, May 21, 1929 in Bedford County, a son of the late James Corbitt Witt and Ethal Ferrell Witt. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jane Carol Witt and daughter, Debra Witt Pugh as well as his grandson, Daniel Rice, and two sisters, Doris Davidson and Clara Trail. He was a self-employed building contractor for many years and was a member of the Bedford Moose Lodge # 1897 for fifty years and of the U. S. Army National Guard from 1944 until 1947. Surviving is his wife, Allene Powers Witt; seven sons, Michael Witt, Tommy Witt & wife, Susie, Dickie Witt & wife, Debbie, John Witt & wife, Babara and Chuckie Witt, all of Bedford; Jeff Witt of Thaxton; Pete Witt & wife, Mary of Richmond; three daughters, Dona Rice & husband, Danny of Bedford; Janet Cutshaw & husband, Davis of Huddleston; Kay Knight & husband, Alton of Charlottesville; two brothers, Bill Witt, Dickie Witt & wife, Barbara, both of Bedford; a sister, Betty Wilkerson of Bedford; twenty-seven grandchildren and twenty-nine great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the graveside at Greenwood Cemetery on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Bob Sowder officiating. Friends may call Tuesday after 12 noon and the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
