Ralph Edward Overstreet, 77 of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born on Monday, September 4, 1933 in Roanoke, a son of the late Frank Jeter Overstreet and Annie Frances Huffman Overstreet. He was President of Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service having been a licensed funeral director for forty-eight years. He also operated Updike Memorials, Inc. for thirty-seven years along with his partners, Wayne & Tim Murphy. He was a member of Bedford Moose Lodge # 1897, the Lynchburg Elks Lodge # 321, and Bedford Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served during the Korean Conflict. Surviving is his wife of fourteen years, Janet Fitzgerald Overstreet; a daughter, Katrina Overstreet Nester & husband, Jerry of Bedford; a step-son, Shawn Cofer & wife, Courtney of Kernersville, NC; a granddaughter, Jill Nester Hayes & husband, Captain James Hayes of Clarksville, TN; a great grandson, Kemper Maddux Hayes; two step-grandchildren, Hunter & Morgan Cofer; a sister, Peggy O. Blankenship & husband, Ferris of Moneta; a niece, Delores B. Feazell & husband, Gary of Moneta, three great nieces as well as his best friend, Johnny Caldwell. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider the American Lung Association, P. O. Box 35010, Richmond, VA 23235. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 11 AM at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Rev. Dr. David Henderson and Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1 until 3 PM and 5 until 7 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford and other times at the residence of his daughter. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
