Obituary of Joseph Clyde Thompson

Joseph Clyde Thompson of Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at the age of 91. He was born in Franklin County on January 27, 1931 to the late William Moorman Thompson and Delia Fielder Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Frances Robertson, Pearl Thompson and Mary Updike; brothers Edward Thompson, William Thompson and Jack Thompson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Marie Kendrick Thompson of Bedford; his daughters, Teresa Selove (David) of Centreville and Kathy Ramyar (Kami) of Mint Hill, NC; son, Greg Thompson of Bedford; grandson, Ryan Selove of Chantilly; sister, Annie Lee Branch of Reidsville, NC; sister-in-law, Louise Thompson of Hardy; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Our father, variously known as Joe, Clyde, and J.C., worked for Rubatex and Babcock & Wilcox, retiring in 1993. He served four years in the Air Force and was honorably discharged in July of 1956, having attained the rank of Airman First Class (A1C). He was quartermaster of VFW Post 2157 for many years, life member of the Moose Lodge and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. He loved working in his vegetable garden, mowing his lawn, fixing anything that needed fixing, helping family, friends and neighbors, going trout fishing, listening to country/bluegrass music and going to the Elks Lodge dances in past years. He loved his wife and family most of all and was a good friend to many. He will be missed! In lieu of flowers, all are invited to give a memorial contribution to Main Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 505, Bedford, VA 24523 or the National D-Day Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 77, Bedford, VA 24523. A funeral service will be held at Updike Funeral Home Chapel, Bedford at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 with Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating. The family will meet friends from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM prior to the service. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
