Gary was born February 1, 1951 to Virginia and Clyde Mitchell of Bedford. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1973 with a B.A. in Political Science. Gary loved football and golf, and enjoyed a number of strong friendships around sports and sport watching. He completed an MBA from Miami University of Ohio, and worked in sales and marketing in the northeast before returning to Bedford to take care of his elderly parents.
Gary was married from 1971 to 1977 but had no children. He was preceded in death by his parents and had no siblings.
