Obituary of James William Kirby

James William Kirby of Altavista, VA, was welcomed into his heavenly home on Saturday, May 14, 2022.  James was preceded in death by maternal grandmother, Willie Sue Martin and his paternal grandfather, William Thomas Kirby, Sr. 

James was a life long resident of Altavista, attending Altavista High School and served many years at BGF. He was highly skilled at video games, loved music, and welcomed the challenge of trying new things. He was the son and big brother everyone wanted--devoted, loyal, protective, and fun-loving, continually proud of the role he played in his family. He extended these qualities to many friends throughout the course of his life. Although James had a soft-spoken and quiet spirit, it quickly became evident to anyone fortunate enough to call him friend that he offered a quick wit, phenomenal sense of humor, and intelligent thoughtfulness beyond his 37 years. He attended Altavista Baptist Tabernacle where his kind hearted and generous nature was appreciated by the congregation. James would give you both the shirt off of his back and the listening ear you needed when troubled or saddened. His faithful presence, warm smile, and natural compassion touched the lives of his family, friends, and the strangers he reached out to on many occasions. His helping hand and loving heart will leave a void in a world that desperately needs the qualities he naturally possessed. 

He is survived by his mother, Mary Annette Martin Kirby; father, William Thomas Kirby (Melinda); brother, Joshua Thomas Kirby; sisters Sara Jo Kirby, Taylor Spears Hatcher (Robert), Hayley Joe Kirby; his paternal grandmother, Mollie Coffey Kirby; maternal grandfather, Curtis Randolph Martin; nieces, Chloe Michelle Kirby and Erin Catherine Kirby; nephews, Trace Andrew Yarborough and Robert Easton Hatcher, and countless other aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends whom he loved and will profoundly miss his light in their lives.

Services are to be determined but you can honor his spirit by reaching out to a hurting stranger, offering compassion to a loved one, or stepping out of your comfort zone to try something new. James' memory will always be present where there is love, humility, and kindness.
