Elton Moorman Jacobs, Sr., of Moneta died at his home on Friday, June 10, 2011 after an extended illness. He was born in Bedford County on December 3, 1924, the youngest and last surviving child of John Moorman Jacobs and Sallie Katherine Craghead Jacobs of Moneta. His wife of 65 years, Eleanor O. Jacobs, died unexpectedly earlier this year on Feburary 25. He is survived by six children, Elton M. Jacobs, Jr., Moneta; Tricia Jacobs Bradley, Beaufort, NC; Susan Kay Jacobs, Roanoke; Carl Edward Jacobs, Samuel Vincent Jacobs and Dawn Rene Jacobs, all of Moneta. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sallie Jacobs Fentress. Other survivors include ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Elton was a veteran of World War II having served in the U. S. Army, a long time member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and was retired from Virginia Electric Power. After his retirement, he considered himself a Bedford County Farmer. He was also a long time member of the Bedford Lodge #244, A.F. and A.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in the name of Elton M. Jacobs, Sr., be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, 406 West 34th Street, Suite 718, Kansas City, MO 64111 or a charity of your choice. A memorial service is planned for Friday, June 17, at 1:00 p.m. at Morgan's Baptist Church in Moneta. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Bedford.
