Obituary of Mary Whorley Ashwell

Mary Whorley Ashwell, 100 of  Bedford, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2023 at the Summit Health Care Center.  She was born on Saturday, December 23, 1922  in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Garnett Whorley and Clara Robertson Whorley.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Ashwell, her brothers, Warren Whorley and Watson Whorley, her twin sister, Emma Arlene Whorley and her sisters, Mable Wills and Ruth Hensley.    

She was a retired employee of Rubatex Corporation and was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church.  She was the last living member of her Huddleston High School Class of 1941 graduating class. 

She is survived by her many nieces & nephews.

The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider Trinity Baptist Church, 947 Lyle Street, Bedford, VA 24523.   

The family will receive friends beginning at 1 PM on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at Trinity Baptist Church and a funeral service will follow at 2 PM with Rev. Wayne Murphy & Rev. Bill Owsley officiating.  Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. 

Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
