Obituary of Collie Lee Mitchen Johnson
Collie Lee Mitchen Johnson, 91 of Bedford, passed away Monday, April 24, 2023 at Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born on Wednesday, July 15, 1931 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Fred Lathan Mitchen and Celestia "Essie" Howell Mitchen. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Moorman Morris Johnson, a grandson, Michael David Johnson, a great-grandson, Jacob Harris and a son-in-law, Glenn Nichols.
Collie Lee was a retired employee of Bedford County Public Schools having been a bus driver and a cafeteria worker. She made many trips nationwide with school cafeteria groups. She also cooked at many restaurants throughout the area including Gross Point, Sportsman's Inn and Eagle's Roost. She was known for the delicious rolls she made for the school as well as the fire department and rescue squads. She was a lifetime member of the Huddleston Elementary School PTA.
She enjoyed the many visits that friends and family made to visit her and especially loved her grandchildren, great grandchildren and her one great great grandchild.
She is survived by her sons, Moorman M. Johnson, Jr. (Judy), Michael R. Johnson (Frances), Rickie L. Johnson, Mark A. Johnson (Mitzi); her daughters, Pamela J. Arrington (Tommy), Peggy J. Nichols; her brother, Willis Mitchen (Nancy); her sister, Carolyn Goin as well as her twelve grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and a special friend, Peggy Brown.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at Staunton Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member with Rev. Jackie Carver & Rev. Buzz Offenbacker officiating. Interment will follow in Staunton Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Huddleston.
