Obituary of Roger Kent Oakes

Roger Kent Oakes, 83 of Bedford, passed away Friday, May 26, 2023 at his residence.  He was born on July 7, 1939, a son of the late Marvin Roger Oakes and Shirley Holland Oakes.  He was preceded in death by a son, Roger Kent Oakes, Jr., a sister, Jackie Oakes.

He received his Bachelors degree from Virginia Tech in 1961 and was President of Aladdin Synergetics until his retirement.  He enjoyed collecting antiques and other collectibles.

He is survived by his wife, Merle Ann Wilson Oakes; daughter-in-law, Mary Kay Oakes; sons, Tim Oakes (Lara), Philip Oakes (Sara), Matt Oakes (Kendra); seven grandchildren, Katie, Tom (Kristen), Allie, Ellen, Wilson, Riley and Grayson and one great granddaughter, Annie; a brother, Wayne Oakes (Nancy); sister, Mary Anne Weeks and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, 5540 Falmouth Street, Suite 101, Richmond, VA 23230.

No services are planned and arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
