Derek - A true friend. Always one call away and ready to come help no matter what he was doing or how far away he was. We could never thank him enough for all he did for us and for being the one of a kind friend he was to my fiancé Kyle and I. Derek will live forever in our hearts! ❤️
Love,

Smartest and kindest man I ever knew it would help you at the drop of a hat. I still remember him picking me up on the side of the road in the middle of the night after my car broke down. I love you buddy.

I am so sorry for the loss of Derek. No words I can say can take the pain away. I fondling remember his a fine student with a big kind smile while walking in the hallways at Staunton River Middle School. I didn't teach Derek, but I always had a pleasant interaction with him in the hallways at school. I pray that God comforts your heart at this difficult time.

Derek you will be loved and missed always . I am so grateful for the years you were a part of our lives and our family. Words can't express how much it means to me the way you loved Natalie and took care of her. I truly believe Heaven became a little brighter when you entered through those gates with that big beautiful smile you always had. We will always carry your love and memories in our hearts , and you always be a part of our lives .

Derek was my nephew and the light of my life. I was there the day he was born and I knew then that he was something very special.
Derek’s eyes and hair got him a lot of attention…but it was his big heart and generosity that made him the man he became. I was blessed to have 22 years of precious moments with him and I will hold every single one of them in my heart forever!!
Whenever Derek was around he would brighten your day by just being there. He would help you anyway he could….whether it was fixing your vehicle, needing a ride somewhere, surprising you with some food or just giving you one of his great hugs!!
Derek really was an amazing young man. He was a great son, awesome brother, incredible nephew, wonderful grandson, adorable fiance’ and a true friend…he was the whole package!!
Derek left us way too soon. But I have comfort in knowing that I will see him again….rest in peace my precious Derek.
Love you so much,
Aunt Cheryl

In 22 short years, Derek had such a positive influence on the people around him. He had a way of lifting your spirits and making you smile. He had a love for people and enjoyed seeing them happy. He never met a stranger. Always willing to help , he would drop what he was doing to help a friend in need.
Derek is my nephew who taught me so much over the years, and is still teaching me things today. So many conversations, words of advice, jokes and laughter. These are the memories that won't be forgotten.

From the moment Derek was born, we knew we had a special son. He was always smiling and happy.
So many memories of him growing up, he enjoyed playing outside with his friends whether it was running around under the sprinkler in the summer, playing in the dirt with his Tonka trucks, jumping in the leaf piles in the fall or sleigh riding in the winter.
He enjoyed going to his grandparents’ houses. At one house he would work in the garage with Papa, building and painting things or playing card games with Grandma and Papa.
At his other grandparents’ house, he would enjoy playing outside whether it was in the pool, going walking or playing wiffle ball. He always enjoyed his birthday parties with all his friends and relatives. He loved Christmas time as well, visiting with family and friends.
When he was 7 years old, we decided to have another child. When we told him, he said he wanted a little sister. His wish came true when Delaney was born in 2008. He loved her with his whole heart from the day she was born and would take care of her and do anything for her. He adored her and included her in everything he did from hanging out with friends to working on cars and trucks. He would take her and her friends to the mall and would also take them in his truck to the beach when we would go on vacation.
When he was 8, the night before we were going camping at Virginia Beach, he fell off his 4-wheeler and broke his arm. We took him to the ER and spent most of the night there, but when we got home, he said “My arm doesn’t hurt, let’s go to the beach”. So that’s what we did, and we all had a great time.
As he got older, he became interested in cars and sold his 4-wheeler so he could buy a car at the age of 14. He loved that car, it was a 1985 Pontiac Trans AM, black with t-tops. It needed a lot of work, but that didn’t discourage him. We worked on it together and fixed it up.
Of course, he then became interested in trucks and bought himself a truck to fix up, which he rebuilt completely. He then decided it was time for a 2001 Trans Am and bought himself one in July of 2022.
In high school he met Natalie and fell in love with her. He absolutely adored Natalie and proposed to her on Christmas Eve 2022. He was excited about getting married and building a life and family together with her.
He was the best son we could have asked for and he was an awesome big brother to Delaney. He had a heart of gold and made friends wherever he went.
His great smile, personality, big blue eyes, sense of humor and his curly hair made him one of a kind. He would put a smile on anyone’s face and a warmth in their heart the moment they met him.
We are proud to be his parents and he will be forever in our hearts and greatly missed.

I was lucky to be able to see Derek grow up from a baby to the fine young man he became. Derek always had a smile on his face and he always had me laughing no matter what joking and carrying on I sure will miss that laugh that's for sure he was a trip.
I remember when he called me about stripping all the paint off his Dads 64 Pontiac Tempest he wanted to get it done and surprise his Dad I was like okay I enjoyed working with him on that project together about like other projects we got into. Derek was always involved in the missions we went on. We really had a good time at Charlotte Auto Fair walking around looking at the cars and parts and helping carry the junk we bought always right there no matter. I remember driving his Firebird out the road doing donuts he was laughing and surprised at the same time. There was so many times Derek would hang out with his Dad and I and to think this will not happen again breaks my heart. I know he will be greatly missed by all that knew him he was the best and one of a kind. I could go on and on.I am so glad to been able to have be a part of his life knowing Todd Cindy and Delaney they are the best people u could ever meet.Until we meet up again buddy rest in peace U will never be forgotten .

We absolutely adored Derek. We referred to him affectionately as our “farm boy”. Such a fine young man who would do anything asked of him. If Scott needed help around the farm, Derek would gladly show up with the grin he is known for. He’d come and hang out at the house often just because. He loved to talk about cars with us. He was such an old soul and with a kinder heart the most adults I’ve known. He was Scott’s birthday twin and was always the first one to wish Scott a happy birthday. He was truly a part of our family, celebrating happy and sad events with us. I followed along with his life milestones (graduation, his career, his engagement) and was always so happy this great kid was getting everything he worked so hard for and deserved. I remember especially what a great big brother he was.
This world has lost a huge shining star, but I know that he is watching over all of his loved ones. That’s just the kind of person he was. There are few people you come across in your life that make an impact so meaningful. I know in my heart Derek was one of those people to many. I hurt for his sister and his parents, and I hope they find comfort in the days to come.
Love
Scott and Christie York

When we were in middle school we won the science fair. Our project was Rock Candy Crystal. We spent hours / days perfecting it.
We also road the same bus in elementary school Mrs. Rita would pay us with a soda for putting up all the windows.
