Obituary of Ray Guilford Mason

Ray Guilford Mason, 90 of  Moneta, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2023 at his residence.  He was born on Sunday, July 2, 1933 in Campbell County, a son of the late James Edward Mason and Roxie Layne Mason.  He was also preceded in death by wife, Josephine Mayhew Mason, a son, Tim Mason and a step-daughter, Judy Shields. 

He was retired from Rubatex Corporation with 30 years of service, had a lawn mowing business for over 40 years, was the Fire Chief of the Moneta Fire Department with  over 50 years of community service, and was a U. S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War from 1950 - 1953.  He enjoyed camping, bluegrass music and loved spending time with his family.  

He is survived by his sons, Lendale Mason (Marcia), Gregory Mason (Phyllis); his daughter-in-law, Penny Mason; his special friend, Frances Layne; step-children, Hilda Craft (Jim), Peggy MaCauley (Jim), Douglas Jacobs, Vicky Burley (Marshall) as well as six grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, numerous step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.   

A graveside service, with military honors by American Legion Post 36 and Gretna Post 232, will be held at 12 noon on Friday, September 8, 2023 at Virginia Memorial Park, 11490 Forest Road, Forest, VA with Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating.  The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 PM on Thursday evening at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
