Obituary of Alfred Henry Hurt
Alfred Henry Hurt, of Moneta passed away Wednesday evening, September 11, 2024 at the age of 89 with his family by his side.
He was born to Stephen & Maggie Scott Hurt of Franklin County, VA in 1935. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hurt was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Meador Hurt; a granddaughter, Faith Wilson; and four siblings, Robert, Stella, Otha, and Christine.
He is survived by his three children, Sylvia Wilson (Danny), Dexter Hurt (Linda) and Gloria Morgan (Dennis); grandchildren, Rhonda Ellis (Mickey), Kirk Wilson, Kendra Hurt, Ryan Hurt, and Logan Hurt; as well as six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hurt was not afraid of hard work. One of his earlier jobs was to transport milk from local dairy farms to the processing plant. He was also employed by Rubatex in Bedford and retired after over 30 years of service. Alfred was known throughout the Moneta/Hardy area for his many skills and fun stories. He was 100 percent “country” and knew all about working on tractors, bulldozers, and chainsaws. Few could size up a giant oak and lay it down in the perfect spot with a chainsaw like Alfred. His work ethic was demonstrated well into his 70’s and early 80’s as he grew and harvested 3 huge gardens by himself. Many will remember his produce stand on Hales Ford Road with the “honor system toolbox” as the method of payment. Alfred enjoyed singing hymns with his family and friends. It was not unusual to see Mr.and Mrs. Hurt in the audience at many of the area’s community events that featured preaching and gospel music. And every now and then, they would share their love of the gospel as part of those featured singers.
A graveside service will be held Friday, September 13, 2024 at 11:00 at the Meador Family Cemetery (Chase Drive - Moneta) with Pastor Donnie Glass officiating. There is no visitation.
The family would like to thank the team of Good Samaritan Hospice for their wonderful care of our Daddy during the days of his passing!
Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
