Ivie Norene Mitchen Mitchell, 93 of Huddleston, was called home on Thursday, September 29, 2011. She was born on Friday, February 22, 1918 in Pittsylvania County, the oldest child of the late Fred Latham Mitchen and Celestia Estelle (Essie) Howell Mitchen. She married Jesse Mitchell in 1936 and lived in Huddleston most of her life. He preceded her in death in 2004. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Curtis & Lloyd Mitchen and sister, Genevie M. Dellis, a granddaughter, Cathy M. Lynch and son-in-law, Lewis Wirt. Surviving are her daughters, Patsy Wirt, Diane Bowyer & husband, Danny, Joanne Caldwell & husband, David, Jeanette Childress & husband, Fred, Sharon Pierce & husband, Mike; a son, Danny Mitchell & wife, Shelby, nine grandchildren, Buck Lynch & wife, Stephanie, Dana McGehee & husband, Trad, Kelly Cederberg & husband, Troy, Kerry Dolph & husband, Shawn, Deena Mustard & husband, Neal; John Childress & wife, Tiffani, Joanna Woodford & husband, Captain Matthew Woodford; Wil Childress and Jessie Pierce; seven great grandchildren, Cody Leamy, Kyle McGehee, Caleb McGehee, Gabriel Mustard, Riley Mustard, Abigail Woodford and Luke Jackson Childress; also two very special family friends, Randi Manis and her daughter, Reagan Harvey; three sisters, Barbara Crouch, Collie Johnson, Carolyn Goin, and two brothers, Kentwood Mitchen & wife, Becky, Willis Mitchen & wife, Nancy. A host of friends and acquaintenances were touched by her life and her hard work. She was a housewife first and foremost and worked for a time at Bedford Dress Factory and early in her married life she worked as a riveter in Baltimore, MD building planes during World War II. Our mother is most known for her years behind the counter and in front of the grill at Mitchell's Snack Bar which she and Jesse started in the mid 1960's on part of the farm which became waterfront when Smith Mountain Lake filled. She devoted herself to helping others all of her life, putting her wants and needs behind the wants and needs of family and anyone who would ask for a favor. Quilting was her joy and she quilted and sewed right to the very end. The family would like to offer special thanks to Bedford Hospice Care. Funeral services will be held at the graveside at Patmos United Methodist Church Cemetery on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Rod Miller officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 4 until 7 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Huddleston.
