Obituary of Theodore Ernest King, Sr.
Theodore Ernest King, Sr., “Ted” of Ocala, FL and formerly of Moneta passed away Friday, December 27, 2024 at the age of 97. He was born July 16, 1927 in Lynchburg, VA, a son of the late Richard Elmer King, Sr. and Gladys Virginia Peay King. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Gladys Pearl "Jean" Tedder King and his older son, Theodore Ernest King, Jr.
Ted was a two tour veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving in the Pacific on the USS Norton Sound, a research vessel. In 1950 Ted started his police career as a patrolman for the District of Columbia Police department. He soon moved to the motorcycle division where he advanced in rank and notably led the “V Formation” of police motorcycles for President Kennedy's Inaugural Parade in 1961. Ted continued to advance and retired in 1976, after twenty-six years, with the rank of Deputy Chief. Along the way Ted attained a Master's Degree from American University, a one year fellowship at Harvard Law School, and attended the FBI National Academy. After raising cows for about 5 years, Ted came out of retirement and served for 7 years as Chief of Police for the City of Bedford, VA where he later retired. He was also a proud and accomplished Mason and Shriner.
He is survived by his present wife, Irene; his son, Michael King (Mary Susan); his grandchildren, Jarrett Tyler King, Jillian Beckett King and four great grandchildren, Hayden, Lydia, Jaxson and Cade; his sister, Lillian Roland; and his brother, George King.
A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7pm on Monday, January 6 at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
