Obituary of Buford Leslie Overstreet
As I write this obituary, I am alive and well. As you read this, I have passed from time on this old earth into eternity. I look forward to reuniting with you in the presence of our Lord.
I, Buford Leslie Overstreet of Roanoke, was born on February 29, 1940, a leap year baby, in Middletown, Delaware. I died on January 6, 2025 at my home on Bent Mountain in Roanoke, Virginia. I was blessed with two mothers that loved me dearly. I was raised by my adoptive parents, Jim and Lillian Overstreet, two of the finest people who ever walked this earth. Later in life, I was reunited with my birth mother, Lurlene Walker Todd. As a grown man, I was able to develop and maintain a close relationship with her until her death.
I graduated from Bedford High School and went on to attend High Point College, graduating from The University of Tulsa, Oklahoma with a degree in petroleum engineering. After college, I returned to Bedford to run the family owned R.P. And J.L. Overstreet Texaco Fuel Oil Business. I was a gentleman farmer who enjoyed writing original gospel music, playing golf, creative cooking, and spending time with my beloved pets.
I am survived by my loving wife, Debra Hackworth Overstreet; our daughter, Allison McKell (James); grandchildren Teagan, Parker, and Nora. In addition I am survived by my son, Steve Overstreet (Emily); my daughter, Leslie Bowyer (Allan); grandchildren Christopher Overstreet (Ashley), Tyler Overstreet (Rebekah), Grafton Padgett, Cat Wolf (Will) and Elisabeth Martin (Josh); great grandchildren, Grace and Josiah Overstreet, Walker and Wren Wolf, and Charlotte Martin. I am also survived by my half sister, Deborah Jane Todd.
A musical celebration service featuring original music and words of faith led by Reverend Ethan Strickler will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Updike Funeral Home Chapel, Bedford. Immediately following the service there will be a celebration of life in the Updike visitation room, so please no tears, comfortable clothes, and enjoy the time together with joy in your heart.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to a charity of your choice. Thank you for making my life better. Buford
