Shirley Gordon Simmons, 73 of Bedford passed away Friday, September 9, 2011. She was born on Wednesday, June 15, 1938 in Bedford County, VA, a daughter of the late Roy Lee Gordon and Thelma Elizabeth Rice Gordon. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Gordon and a sister, Margaret Andrews. She was a Owner/Operator of Shirley's Beauty Salon and was a member of Longwood Avenue Baptist Church. Surviving are her sons, Gary W. Hale, Evington; Jackie A. Hale, Donald E. Hale, Michael J Hale, Jimmy L. Hale, all of Bedford; a daughter, Patricia A. Goad, Bedford as well as eighteen Grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Gordon, Evington; Billy Gordon, Bedford; four sisters, Faye Lafon, Ruth Manspile, Bonnie Robertson, Linda Robertson, all of Bedford. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider the Bedford Humane Society, P. O. Box 1293, Bedford, VA 24253. Funeral services will be held from the graveside at Virginia Memorial Park on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Kenneth Lafon officiating. Friends may call Monday after 12 noon and the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
