John Herbert Clark, 76 of Bedford, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2011 at his residence. He was born on Monday, December 24, 1934 in Cleveland, OH, a son of the late John Henry Clark and Sarah Jane Plews Clark. He was a retired Custom Home Builder to include several churches and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. Surviving is his wife of fifty-nine years, Evelyn G. Short Clark; two sons, John H. Clark II and wife Lorraine, Bruce W. Clark and wife, Vicki all of Bedford; two daughters, Sandra L. McCabe and husband David of Lynchburg and Kimberly J. Schaal and husband Kenneth, of Goode as well as nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and his faithful canine companions, Kandi, Katie and Molly. John enjoyed his Blue Grass and Gospel Blue Grass and working in his yard and tending to his breath-taking, vibrant colored flower beds. He was a wonderful and dedicated Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend. The family would like to send a special THANK YOU to the nurses with Centra Hospice of Lynchburg for their quality of care and most importantly their compassion during this time. They would especially like to mention Crystal, Leigh and Suzanne. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Bedford Humane Society, P. O. Box 1293, Bedford, VA 24253. A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Lyons officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
