Mary DeWitt Obituary

Mary Hardy DeWitt, 74 of Bedford, VA passed away Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Centra Hospice House. She was born on Wednesday, January 6, 1937 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Adam Crisman Hardy and Willie Bowyer Hardy. She graduated from James Madison University, where she doubled majored in Dietetics and Education and then earned her Masters Degree in Education at University of Virginia. She worked as a registered Dietician at Lewis Gale Hospital for five years in her early career. She then taught school in the Bedford County School System for fourteen years. In later years, she was very active in the church, clubs and organizations. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Bedford Historical Society and the American Association of University Women. Surviving is her husband, Lynwood G. DeWitt; a son, Gerald C. DeWitt & wife, Tammy of Bedford, her twin grandchildren and the loves of her life, Nick & Maggie DeWitt, two nieces, Kay Johnson and Carolyn Overstreet, two nephews, Adam (Tater) Hardy and Preston Hardy, and a great aunt, Virginia Kraige. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider Salem United Methodist Church, c/o Bonnie Dagenhart, 1722 Broadway Avenue, Bedford, VA 24523. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 11:00 am at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Rev. Jack Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. Friends may call Tuesday after 12 noon and the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford
