Kermit Russell Ferguson, 93, of Bedford County, died on November 20, 2011 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born May 14, 1918 in Bedford County, the son of the late James Russell and Eva Dowdy Ferguson. He was raised from the age of four by his late grandparents, Julian and Emma Dowdy. He was predeceased by his wife of over 58 years Annie Chafin Ferguson and a brother Aubrey Julian Ferguson. He was a farmer, a World War II veteran serving in the South Pacific, and worked for Bedford Grocery Co. before becoming the proprietor of Body Camp Store for 18 years. He was a former member of Palestine Baptist Church, and was a member of Quaker Baptist Church for over 65 years. He is survived by his daughter, Eva Estelle Ferguson of Bedford, his sister Lillian Iva Franklin of Greenville, SC, his half-brother James L. Ferguson of Bedford, whom he raised and half-sister Mary Jane Bryant of Bedford, one aunt Helen D. Turner or Bedford, one niece Shelby F. McCrimmon (Michael) of Greenville, SC, one nephew Jimmy Ray Franklin of Bedford, and many cousins. Funeral services will be held at Quaker Baptist Church at 11:00 on November 23, 2011 with Rev. David Timma and Rev. Alex McFarland officiating. Interment, with military honors by American Legion Post # 16, will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 22, 2011 from 6 to 8 at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Quaker Baptist Church, 4667 Chestnut Fork Rd, Bedford, VA 24523, Moneta Fire Department, P. O. Box 455, Moneta, VA 24121 or any charity of choice. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
