Milan Arthur Aschbrenner, 79 of Moneta, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012 at his residence. Milan was born in Bremer Co., Iowa, on May 19, 1932 to Arthur and Elsie (Lemke) Aschbrenner, confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sumner on March 25, 1945 and graduated from Sumner High School in 1949. He spent four years in the U. S. Navy as a Seabee, and then worked in the Iowa State Conservation Commission for twelve years. In 1973, Milan moved his family to Moneta, Virginia and worked as an equipment operator and carpentry contractor until his retirement in 2001. Milan will be best remembered for his love of hunting and fishing. He hunted in Iowa and Virginia, hunted elk in Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho and moose in Maine. He served twenty-three years as a Volunteer Hunter Education Instructor and received a lieftime membership in the Virginia Hunter Education Association. Milan was a member of the NRA (Lifetime), Ducks Unlimited, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Wild Turkey Federation and American Legion (fifty-five years) and St. Timothy's Lutheran Church. He was also a past member of Bedford Moose Lodge # 1897 and the Moneta Ruritan Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister & brother-in-law, Lois & Dale Domke, and a step-grandson, Jason Fisher. He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Beverly Aschbrenner; daughter, Renee Aschbrenner, daughter & son-in-law, Tami & Paul Fisher; son, Roger Aschbrenner, daughter, Sandra Wilson, grandchildren, Justin and Katie (Weedon) Wilson, Stacie Wilson, Ryan Fisher, Stephanie Fisher, EmaLeigh Aschbrenner, Mikaela Aschbrenner, step-grandson, Joshua Fisher, step-great grandchildren, Brandon, Kalisda and Evan Fisher, brother & sister-in-law, Ronald & Shirley Aschbrenner and eight nieces. A service to celebrate the life of Milan Aschbrenner will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 10:30 am at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Virginia Hunter Education Association, c/o Vernie Kennedy, 1272 Kennedy Ridge Road, Bedford, VA 24523, Bedford Hospice Care, P. O. Box 688, Bedford, VA 24523 of the charity of your choice. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
