Giles Rucker Bowyer, 88 of Bedford, VA passed away Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Oakwood Health & Rehab. Center. He was born on Thursday, July 5, 1923 in Bedford Co. , a son of the late William Whorton Bowyer and Nannie Mae Overstreet Bowyer. He was also preceded in death by his 14 siblings. He was a retired machinist at Elk City Auto Parts and was a member of Timber Ridge Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He served as a Staff Sergeant with the 37th Division's, 129th Infantry Regiment during WWII on Luzon. He received a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Annie Swain Bowyer; his children; Carolyn B. Bays & husband, Dennis of Bedford, Danny R. Bowyer & wife, Dianne of Bedford, Janet B. Bays & husband, David of Forest, and Allan R. Bowyer & Leslie of Bedford; grandchildren, Debbie Bays Leech, Michael Bays, Lisa Bowyer Cash, Amanda Bays, Ashley Bays and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday March 17, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Rev Wayne Murphy and Pastor Phillip Kelley officiating. Interment will follow in the Timber Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
