Garnett Edward "Jack" Coleman, of Bedford County, VA, died March 12, 2012, at Oakwood Health and Rehab Center, Bedford. He was born December 2, 1918, in Bedford County. Jack was the son of Samuel W. and Cornelia Hancock Coleman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Florence Stanford Coleman, three brothers and their spouses and five sisters and three spouses, and a grandson, Thomas Sperry Field, II. Jack is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline Coleman Field and the following grandchildren and great grandchildren: Steven Craig and Cynthia Hall Field, & Cameron H.; Jeffrey Garnett and Jean Shelor Field, & Matthew C., Joshua N.; Melanie Rebecca Field; Thomas Stuart and Cynthia Van Burkleo Field, & Glenn T., Daniel S., Carly E.; Marty L. and Allison Field Crow, & Madison S., Molly A., McKenzie I., Eli E.; and Richard K. and Kathleen Field Michael, & Nathan T., Travis K., Austin J. He also has 26 Coleman and 9 Stanford very special nieces and nephews, a brother, Calvin H. and Deane B. Coleman of Rockbridge Baths, VA, and a sister, Dora Jean Coleman Stallard of Lynchburg, VA. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the following for the wonderful care given to Jack: Campbell's Rest Home, the late Mrs. Helen Burks, Shirley Starks and the entire staff for their compassion and love. The dining staff is also thanked for their home-cooked meals enjoyed by the residents. The family also thanks Dr. Howis Toler, the staff of the Emergency Room, Radiology Department, Medical/Surgical 3rd floor, and ICU 3rd floor of Bedford Hospital, Carilion Clinic Hospice, Dr. Linda Beahn, Cathy Neas, Stephanie Gifford and the 3rd floor staff of Oakwood Health and Rehab Center. Pastor David A. Whitehurst will be officiating at the graveside service at Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, VA, on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 11:00 AM. Updike Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Bedford is handling the arrangements.
