Eliza "Lillian" Howell Cheek, 88 of Huddleston, passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2012. She was born on Saturday, September 8, 1923 in Huddleston, a daughter of the late Spicer J. Howell and Opal Ferguson Howell. She was also preceded in death by husband, Andrew Milton Cheek, son-in-law, Arthur Hemmerlein and a great-grandchild, Daryn Tyler Hackworth and a sister, Lucille H. Ayers. She was a dispatcher for the Huddleston Fire and Rescue squads from 1959 until the current 911 system took over. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Huddleston Fire & Rescue and was a member Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church. Surviving is her son, Roger W. Cheek & wife, Sheron of Bedford, 2 daughters; Bonnie C. Hemmerlein of Emerald Isle, NC. and Rita C. Hackworth & husband, Steve of Lynch Station, 6 Grandchildren; Michael Cheek & wife, Debi, April Cheek Messier & husband, John, Jennifer Hemmerlein & husband, Pat Godwin, Jonathan Hemmerlein & wife, Kelli, Jeremy Hackworth, Brandon Hackworth, 12 Great grandchildren and a sister, Maude Overstreet of Moneta. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider the Huddleston Fire Department, 5377 Smith Mountain Lake Parkway, Huddleston, VA 24104 or the Huddleston Lifesaving Crew, P.O. Box 77, Huddleston VA 24104 . Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Updike Funeral Home Chapel, Huddleston with David Bayse and Rev. Steve Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, August 10, 2012 from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm. at the funeral home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Rita Hackworth. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Huddleston.
