David Arthur Caldwell, 71 of Huddleston, died Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at his home on Smith Mountain Lake after a short battle with cancer. He was born on Friday, April 11, 1941 in Roanoke, a son of the late Arthur Caldwell and Marcella Whitlock Caldwell. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Caldwell and a brother-in-law, James W. Hufton, Sr. David enjoyed fishing on Smith Mountain Lake and hunting. He was the original owner and builder of Shoprite, the first grocery store at Smith Mountain Lake. Surviving is his wife, Joanne Mitchell Caldwell; a son, D. Christopher Caldwell, M.D. & wife, Elizabeth of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren, Davis, Wesley & Lane Caldwell; his sister, Phyllis C. Hufton of Roanoke; nieces, Marcee Cook & husband, Chris, Pam Caldwell, all of Roanoke, Kim Longberry & husband, Jeff of Fort Wayne, IN; nephews, Jimmy Hufton & wife, Stephanie, Jay Carter & wife, Kim, all of Roanoke; his brother-in-law, Danny Mitchell & wife, Shelby of Huddleston; his sisters-in-law, Diane Bowyer & husband, Danny, Patsy Wirt, Jeanette Childress & husband, Fred, Sharon Pierce & husband, Mike, all of Smith Mountain Lake, Susan Price & husband, David of Daleville and his special caregivers, Drema Wygal and Carilion Clinic Bedford Hospice. The family requests those wishing to make memorials to consider the Huddleston Lifesaving Crew, P. O. Box 77 Huddleston, VA 24104. Funeral services will be held at the graveside at Staunton Baptist Church Cemetery on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 11 AM with Dr. John R. Reale officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
