Obituary of Charles Witt
Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:3 On November 16, 1927, in Bedford County, Charles Grayson Witt, was born the youngest of seven boys to John Clayton & Myrtha Martin Witt. He died on Monday, February 11, 2013. At the age of thirteen months, due to the illness of his mother, he went to live with his Uncle Frank and Evie Johnson Witt, and he called them his Mama & Daddy. He was raised with his cousins, Ollie Witt, Lois Witt Talton, Nancy Witt Edwards, Lula Witt Manche, Joyce Witt Megginson and he was known as their older brother. He lived his entire life in Bedford County, never forgetting and being part of the life of his father "Daddy" John and his brothers, Carlton, Clayton, Herman, Edward, Billy and Ralph, all who preceded him in death. His work ethic began at a young age working at Carlyle Dairy to owning his fuel oil distribution company in Bedford. His mentors were E. L. Carlyle and Pete Jamerson. Charles Never met a stranger and enjoyed life to the fullest, quick to be engaged in a conversation. He could make or repair any of his "equipment", loved tending his cows, planting a garden and making his special "homemade" pineapple ice cream. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Marie Zimmerman Witt; two son, Mark Douglas Witt & special friend, Bradley Draper of Bassett, Michael "Mike" Dennis Witt & wife, Loni of Lynchburg. Howard Grayson Witt, the firstborn preceded him in death in 2010. Also surviving are his two grandsons, Howard Grayson Witt, Jr., of Bedford, Anthony "Tony" Witt & his wife, Dana and great grandson, Mason Witt of Southport, NC. Surviving him are many nieces and nephews from "both" his families. Charles was a proud, humble man, a devoted and loving husband and was a caring father who provided for his children. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to your favorite charity. He was a forty-five year member and elder of Bedford Presbyterian Church. His funeral will be held there on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 11:00 am with Rev. John Salley officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. He will be sadly missed. He will live in the house of the Lord forever. MAY THE WORK I HAVE DONE SPEAK FOR ME. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
