Carlton Byron Nester, 85 of Montvale, passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday, March 12, 2013. He was born on Sunday, June 5, 1927 in Bedford County, a son of the late Patrick Byron Nester and Bertha Anderson Nester. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Edith Irene Wood Nester; father-in-law, Willie Wood; mother-in-law, Pearl A. Potter & husband, Ben; brothers, Patrick J. Nester & wife, Rosie, Harry Nester & wife, Ola; a sister, Shirley Saunders & husband, Ivan, and brothers-in-law, Alvin Thomas & Lindy Hayes. Carlton was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during World War II. He worked for Red Line Trucking and retired from Hall's Motor Transit. Surviving is his daughter, Lori Ann Nester of Montvale; his son, Carlton Wayne Nester & wife, Cheryl of Thaxton; his grandson, Brandon O. Nester & wife, Megan of Roanoke; a granddaughter, Rachel F. Nester of Thaxton; a great-granddaughter, Ainsley Kate Nester of Roanoke, two sisters, Geraldine Thomas of Vinton, Gaynell Mitchell & husband, Maurice of Lynchburg; sister-in-law, Joyce A. Hayes of Roanoke; step-sister, Shelba English & husband, Page of Penhook; an aunt, Rachel Anderson as well as many nieces & nephews. He is also survived by his special friend, Janice Jones of Christiansburg & her daughter, Lori Lea Parry & husband, J. D., their daughter, Kayleigh and granddaughter, Briley, all of Gadsden, AL. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their comfort & care during Carlton's stay. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in Glade Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 until 8 PM Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
